Restoration of involuted zymogenic cells in hypophysectomized rats by replacement therapy.

چکیده
Following hypophysectomy of the rat, partial involution occurs in the zymogenic cells of the stomach (Baker and Abrams, '54), parotid gland (Baker and Abrams, '55), pancreas (Baker and Pliske, '57) , submandibular gland (Lacassagne and Chamorro, '40 ; Grad and Leblond, '49) , and in the intestinal cells of Paneth (Baker, Kent and Pliske, in press). Insofar as they have been studied, enzyme synthesis is suppressed in these cells, also. The question of how the hypophysis exerts its influence over zymogenic cells will be answered only when they are restored to normal in hypophysectomized rats by replacement therapy. The purpose of this report is to present the results of experiments in which somatotropin, corticosterone and thyroxine were administered in combination. These hormones were selected for several reasoiis. Somatotropin has induced a significant but limited increase in weight of the pancreas in hypophysectomized rats (Kinash et al., '53; Baker and Abrams, '55). The absolute weight of the parotid gland was increased, also, by somatotropin in hypophysectomized rats, although not out of proportion to the augmented body weight (Baker and Abrams, '55). Thyroxine was used be-

Synthesis and Secretion of Rat Albumin in Vc’uo, in Perfused Liver, and in Isolated Hepatocytes
The effects of hypophysectomy on albumin and total protein synthesis in rat liver were investigated in uiuo, in perfused liver, and in isolated hepatocytes. In all systems, hypophysectomy resulted in about a 50% decrease in the rate of total protein synthesis and a 30 to 50% decrease in the relative rate of albumin synthesis. Albumin synthesis accounted for 11 to 13% of total protein synthesis ...
متن کاملMetastasis inhibition by BRMS1 and miR-31 replacement therapy in claudin-low cell lines
Objective(s): The growing trend of research demonstrates that dynamic expression of two metastasis repressor classes (metastasis suppressor genes and anti-metastatic miRNA) has a close relationship with tumor invasion and metastasis. Using different strategies, it was revealed that cellular levels of miR-31 and Breast cancer Metastasis Suppressor1 (BRMS1) protein, whic...

entiated tumors. The first-generation transplantable tumors are usually differentiated, functional, and thyrotropin dependent. The tumors of later generations are often poorly differentiated, nonfunctional, and thyrotropin independent. Williams and Doniach (15) observed growth of thyroid autotransplants in hypophysectomized rats and in rats with thyrotropin secretion suppressed by administratio...
متن کاملInadequacy of the Jak/Stat Signal Transduction Pathway to Mediate Episodic Growth Hormone-dependent Regulation of Hepatic CYP2C11
CYP2C11, the most commonly expressed hepatic P450 isoform in male rats, is induced by the masculine “episodic” secretory growth hormone profile. A considerable number of reports have indicated that episodic growth hormone effects are mediated by the activation of the Jak2/Stat5B signal transduction pathway. We observed that restoration of the normal masculine plasma growth hormone pulse in hypo...
متن کاملA histochemical and biochemical study of the parotid gland in normal and hypophysectomized rats.
Baker and Abrams ( '55) demonstrated a marked reduction in weight of the parotid gland after hypophysectomy. Concurrently, the acinar cells became smaller, were depleted of zymogenic granules and their amylase content was reduced (Baker et al., '56). These observations suggest that maintenance of the normal structure and function of the parotid gland is dependent on the action of hormones. Addi...
